Out of Control

“In Baltimore, hoodlums hammered at [Lincoln’s railroad car], sticking their faces through the windows and hollering, ‘Trot him out! Let’s have him! We’ll give you hell! You bloody Black Republicans!,’” according to Elizabeth Mitchell in her book, Lincoln’s Lie.

“They streamed in through the doors and packed the journalists’ car until the reporters found themselves backed up against the sides. A few men even burst into Mrs. Lincoln’s car and aides forced them out. All the while the conductor  bellowed that the president-elect was not on board,” Mitchell wrote.

“If anyone had wondered at the sagacity of the president’s decision to leave undercover the previous nights, it would have been answered then,” she concluded.
